Taxi or private hire in Marseille: which to choose?

You search for 'Marseille taxi' but you're offered private hire, or the other way round. Both carry passengers, both are regulated — but they don't follow the same rules, and depending on your situation, one is objectively better than the other. Here is the straight-talking comparison, written by a private-hire chauffeur who knows both worlds.

The legal difference in 30 seconds

The taxi holds a licence (ADS) granting three monopolies: waiting at ranks, being hailed in the street, and charging by the time-and-distance meter. Private hire (a chauffeured passenger car) is listed on the national VTC register: it works exclusively by advance booking, at a price agreed before departure. Neither is 'more official': both are statuses governed by the Transport Code.

Price: meter versus fixed fare

The taxi meter runs on distance and time: in the jams of the L2 or the Prado-Carénage tunnel, the price climbs while you sit still. Add night, Sunday and public-holiday surcharges, plus extras (luggage, a 5th passenger). Private hire quotes a firm price at booking: with us, Marseille-Provence Airport to the centre is €60, by day or at 3 a.m. on 25 December, jams included. On a clear day a taxi can be slightly cheaper; as soon as there is traffic, a late hour or a holiday, the fixed fare wins — and above all, you know the amount before you get in.

At the airport and station: two logics

Stepping out of the hall, the taxi rank is the immediate option with no booking — handy if your arrival is unplanned, with a wait that varies with demand. Private hire is booked beforehand: your chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board, and waiting after landing is free (60 minutes with us). Flight two hours late? He is still there, at the same price. It is the way business travellers and cruise passengers prefer to work, not wanting to discover the price or hunt for a car on arrival.

What the taxi does and private hire doesn't

In fairness: for an immediate departure with no booking (hailing in the street, a station rank), the taxi is the only one allowed. And for CPAM-approved medical transport, only approved taxis and VSLs are reimbursed. If you are in either case, take a taxi — it is the right tool.

What private hire does better

Price known in advance and guaranteed. Vehicle and chauffeur confirmed in writing. Personal name-board greeting with flight or train tracking. Booking at any hour for any hour — including a 4 a.m. start for an early flight. Chosen vehicle (sedan, Tesla, 8-seat van), child seat ready, card payment on board. In short: anything you can plan is better booked as private hire.

In short

Immediate departure with no preparation, or approved medical transport: taxi. Airport, station, cruise, night, long-distance or event transfers — or simply wanting to know exactly who is coming and what you will pay: private hire. To check a price in 10 seconds, use the fare simulator on the home page — over 240 destinations at a fixed fare.

Can a private-hire car pick up at the airport taxi rank?

No. Ranks and stands are reserved for taxis. A private-hire car waits for you in arrivals with a name board, by advance booking only — that is the law, and it is also what guarantees your chauffeur is there for you.

Is private hire cheaper than a taxi in Marseille?

Not always. On a traffic-free day, a metered taxi can be competitive. The difference with private hire is certainty: the price is set before departure and does not move, whatever the jams, the hour or an unplanned detour. At night and on public holidays, the fixed private-hire fare avoids meter surcharges.

Can you hail a private-hire car in the street?

No, street hailing is reserved for taxis. Private hire is booked in advance — by phone, WhatsApp or online. In return, your vehicle and chauffeur are confirmed before departure.

Is a private-hire trip reimbursed like an approved taxi?

Approved seated medical transport (CPAM) is reserved for approved taxis and VSLs. For those trips, use an approved taxi. We do, however, carry patients and companions who are not going through CPAM cover.

Is Marseille Provence Driver a taxi?

No: we are a private-hire company (a chauffeured passenger car service), listed on the register of VTC operators. We appear in 'taxi' searches because that is the word everyone uses, but our service works by booking only, at a fixed fare quoted before departure.
